Quercus macrocarpa
(Bur Oak)
A large tree usually 80′ with rounded crown.
Leaves: deciduous, simple, rounded lobes, alternate and thick and firm dark green and shiny on top, paler beneath.
Flowers: Spring, male catkins 4 to 6 inches in length, female at the base of the new leaves.
Fruit: Large acorn, 1″ long.
Twigs: brown, thick and stout, developing corky ridges down to the small branches.
Bark: Dark gray to brown, prominent parallel vertical ridges and deep furrows.
Comments: Long lived tree, wildlife, drought tolerant and prefers well-drained soils.
