Plantanus occidentalis
(American Sycamore)
A large tree commonly 65′ to 75′ but can exceed 100′ in height, having an irregular crown.
Leaves: deciduous, alternate, simple, 3 –5 lobed and 1′ wide, bright green on top, paler and hairy beneath, turning brown in autumn.
Flowers: April-May, inconspicuous green balls.
Fruit: September-October, aggregate, 1″ in diameter.
Bark: distinctive greenish or cream-color, scales flake off, whitish new bark.
Comments: long-lived, fast growing, beautiful bark and foliage, occasionally used for boxes, crates and furniture.
