Swamp Chestnut Oak

Quercus michauxii

A large tree with rounded crown growing to 80′ tall and often reaching heights of 100′.

Leaves: simple, deciduous, 6–8″ long and 3–5″ wide, margins are coarsely toothed, wooly underneath.

Twigs: green at first turning to brown then gray in second year.

Fruit: ovoid acorn about 1–1 1/2″ long and one-third covered by rough scaly cup.

Bark: light gray and on mature trees divided into strips or broadly flaked.

Comments: tolerates moist sites, straight trunk, relatively pest free, good tree for wildlife.
