A medium to large tree with a pyramidal crown that may grow to 80′ tall
Leaves: evergreen, simple, alternate, dark green and glossy above and rusty brown hairy beneath.
Flowers: showy white flowers, May to early summer, 6-9″, very fragrant.
Fruit: Ripening in the fall, cone 2–4″ long with exposed red seeds.
Twigs: Stout, terminal buds are large, 1 to 1/2″ long, pale or covered with brown fur.
Bark: light brown to gray, smooth at first, later becoming scaly.
Comments: Very tough tree, forms dense root mats, free of serious pest or disease problems, an elegant evergreen.
